European destinations popular with British tourists are among the continent's crime hotspots, new research has revealed.

The survey by website swiftcover revealed that nearly one in six Brits - 14 per cent - had been a victim of theft while abroad.

And the ranking of the top holiday crime hotspots revealed some familiar names to British holidaymakers: Spain was first, followed by France second, with Italy and Greece fourth and fifth respectively.

Close to 40 per cent of those who had reported their possesions as stolen had been holidaying in Spain, the poll indicated.

And just under 20 per cent had been targeted by thieves while on holiday in France.

The age group that was most often targeted while abroad were 45 to 54 year olds, which attract a quarter of all holiday crime.

Holidaymakers were advised to keep an eye on their possesions while they are seeing the sights, as almost a quarter of all respondents said they had had their possesions stolen when they were on the street or visiting tourist attractions.

Make sure to take care of your possesions, and secure travel insurance before you leave, call or check online for great value deals from InsureandGo.
