Heathrow has announced that New York, Paris and Dublin as the top destinations for travellers.
The London airport receives a high volume of transfer passengers because it serves as a hub for many airline operators.
It is the busiest airport in Europe and handles more international flights than any other in the world.
According to spokesperson Damon Hunt, "around 35 per cent of passengers are transfer passengers. They don't even leave the airport."
He reports that the top ten destinations list for Heathrow has remained fairly static in the last couple of years.
However, he did say that while the number of travellers to European destinations has stayed about the same, there has been an increase in the number of transatlantic flights.
