The Conservative party has announced radical proposals to tax "frequent fliers" in a bid to combat climate change.

Shadow chancellor George Osborne set out the plans, which were published in a consultation document over the weekend.

As part of the plans, air passenger duty will be replaced with a "per flight" tax, which will involve a charge based on the journey's level of carbon emissions.

Mr Osborne said, however, that the tax is designed to have the most impact on those who regularly travel on planes, rather than families taking their annual holidays.

But the plans have received criticism from airlines. Virgin said that the moves would damage the economy.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for British Airways commented: "Taxation is an extremely blunt instrument in terms of reducing carbon emissions."
