The popularity of destinations that may have previously been perceived as "dangerous" is set to soar in 2008, according to a new study.

Responsibletravel.com reports that locations in Central and South America such as Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua have seen "huge" surges in the number of enquiries made about them, with the latter seeing an increase of 259 per cent.

Justin Francis, co-founder and managing director of the site, comments: "We're also predicting an increase in popularity for Colombia in 2008 as more tour operators begin to offer trips there and people become more confident about getting off the beaten track."

The top five most popular destinations listed on responsibletravel.com in 2007 were the UK, Tanzania, Kenya, Egypt and Thailand.

Consumers planning a trip anywhere, especially destinations away from established tourist resorts, may find that they benefit from contacting InsureandGo to obtain a competitive deal on a travel insurance policy.
