The recent riots in Burma have led British authorities to warn travellers against all but essential travel to the country.

The Foreign Office updated its latest travel warning to Burma, also known as Myanmar, on Wednesday as the government began a crackdown on local protestors.

'We advise against all but essential travel to Burma due to the unsettled political situation,' was the advice released by the Foreign Office.

According to the government, the numerous reports of clashes between protestors and security forces, and their widespread nature, with the tensions having spilled over to nearby cities, have made the country unsafe.

And a curfew has been imposed between 18:00 and 06:00 in the cities of Yangon and Mandalay, with gatherings of more than five prohibited by the Burmese government.

The crackdown by the government on Buddhist protestors was also condemned on Wednesday by prime minister Gordon Brown.

In 1988, similar street protests ended in thousands killed by the ruling Burmese junta.
