David Speakman, chairman of Travel Counsellors, has criticised the new proposed £1 levy for ATOL protection.
The levy was proposed as a solution to protecting tourists in of case their travel company going out of business.
In a letter to the CAA's chairman, parliamentary under secretary of state for transport Jim Fitzpatrick said the government had chosen 'in principle' that the levy should be introduced as of April 1st next year.
Mr Speakman argued that this fee should not be borne by the customer:
"After all, the customer is being asked to pay to guarantee that his holiday company will not go bust. Just try asking a customer to pay a similar fee to guarantee that the company he bought a fridge from doesn't go bust before the fridge is delivered," he said.
The introduction of the levy has also been opposed by the Association of British Insurers.
