Travel agents have been surprised by a better start to the year, as more people are getting holiday insurance and taking a trip.

According to Travel Weekly, Egypt has been selling well as a holiday spot, with long-haul destinations seemingly favoured over the eurozone.

Those planning to escape the big chill currently being experienced by the UK should make sure that they do not forget their travel insurance in the rush to catch the sun.

Global Travel Group consultant George Begg told Travel Weekly he was pleasantly surprised that bookings had not "fallen off a cliff".

Holidays such as cruises are continuing to sell well, the report states, though customers may be looking for cheaper deals as they tighten the purse strings.

Brian Gillespie, manager of Oasis Travel, said that his firm was "slightly up" on last year and he was happy with the situation at present.

A number of airlines are trying to tempt people into jetting off by launching sales on fares and offering promotions such as a child travels for free.

Frequent jetsetters who regularly escape the UK winter could find that annual multi trip insurance from InsureandGo offers them the right level of cover.
