When looking to buy
travel insurance, consumers should consider how much protection it gives them, rather than simply how much it costs, according to industry experts.
A spokesman for the Association of British Insurers said that the cheapest deals tend to offer the least comprehensive cover.
Malcolm Tarling of the ABI said that those who do not need extensive cover may be able to benefit from cheaper deals, but warned that going without
travel insurance altogether was too risky.
His comments come as research company Defaqto warned this week that
cheap travel insurance deals often offer inadequate cover and urged consumers to shop around for the best policies for them.
"Insurance is a product, and like many things you buy, you tend to get what you pay for," Mr Tarling said.
"Defaqto are right in saying that you should compare policies on cover rather than solely on price
In terms of travel insurance, the more expensive products may provide a greater range of benefits"
He added: "Shop around, read the terms and conditions and get the right cover at the right price."
