Adequate travel insurance is becoming an increasing necessity as cancelled flights and delays are affecting UK holidaymakers, Halifax Travel has warned.

If a passenger's flight is delayed or cancelled, airlines have no commitment to offer compensation, said Halifax.

Comprehensive travel insurance can help with these last minute losses.

Travellers were also advised to take enough cash with them to the airport in case they need to buy food and drink due to lengthy delays.

But holidaymakers were told to stay away from drinks such as tea or coffee while they wait for the plane to take off, as both can dehydrate the body.

'When travelling by air you need to plan for every eventuality, including delays.Heightened security at airports is now a fact of life, but can lead to long and frustrating delays for passengers and for many it can ruin the start of a much anticipated trip or holiday,' said Vicky Emmott, senior manager of underwriting for Halifax Travel.

The recent floods in the UK has also contributed to the travel chaos, with many passengers having to miss flights or being forced to cancel their holidays.

In comments to the Guardian, Emma Parker of the Financial Ombudsman Service, warned travellers to check the extent of cover, as some policies might not include extreme cases like floods as a reason for flight cancellation.
