Getting the right travel insuranceis as important as having a suitcase, according to an industry expert.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, said that going on a trip away without the correct type of travel insurance is a "false economy" as many people often need to claim on their cover while abroad.

He went on to say that holidaymakers should not rely on their European health insurance cards, pointing out that for those who may experience an accident while skiing these may be useless.

Many medical centres on ski slopes are private, he said, so the cards would not provide cover in the event of an accident.

Mr Trudgill also pointed out that with travel insurance you get "ever such a lot" for not much money and urged those going away to get the right level of cover.
