Travel insurance policies are primarily designed to protect holidaymakers against unexpected occurrences, one expert has pointed out.
Responding to the recent decision of some insurers to reduce levels of cover for baggage loss for customers travelling from Heathrow's Terminal 5, Malcolm Tarling, chief executive of the Association of British Insurers, said that the decision was taken because such an event could no longer be described as unforeseeable.
"Not all insurers took that view a number of insurers publicly said that they would continue to provide cover," Mr Tarling added.
Commenting on the likelihood of reduced cover resulting from increased instances of extreme weather conditions, he said that this is already seen in some areas where flooding has become more likely to occur, with insurance providers looking to find ways to manage the increased risk.
British Airways is thought to have lost out on more than £16 million since the opening of its new terminal on March 27th.
