People need to make sure their travel insurance covers them for "any eventuality" and should not rely on items such as European Health Cards giving comprehensive cover.

Founder of InsureandGo Perry Wilson said that the card gives "very basic medical cover" in some countries but urged travellers that holiday insurance was essential as medical treatment abroad can be extremely costly.

"For example, you know that if you are going skiing, it is going to cost £6000 if you break a leg in France to come back," he commented.

Mr Wilson went on to say that should an injury or illness abroad be more serious than a broken limb, the costs could run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Recent figures from Aldi Travel suggest that people put value for money near the top of the list when booking a break - but five per cent of those surveyed admit to travelling abroad without holiday insurance to save money.

Single trip insurance from InsureandGo can give cover for any medical emergency on a holiday, whether it be a broken leg or a more serious ailment.
