Fans travelling to France for the Rugby World Cup should not expect their insurance to cover them in cases resulting from alcohol abuse, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has warned.

A spokesperson for the insurers' group said travellers that lose their possessions due to being 'blind drunk' should not expect their insurance cover to come to the rescue.

"If you get blind drunk, wonder back one night and realise you've left half your possessions in a bar, you can't expect your travel insurer to pay. It's a standard exclusion," he said.

According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 41 per cent of Britons admit to drinking 'much more' when on holiday abroad than they would at home.

Recent research also revealed that most theft and lost of possessions happen in short trips to nearby countries: 37 per cent said they had had their valuables stolen while in Spain, 19 per cent in France, while 9 per cent where in the UK.
