When considering ways to reduce the environmental effect of travel, it is important to weigh the impact of various methods of transport, it has been suggested.
According to John Buckley, managing director of environmental advice firm Carbon Footprint, while aviation does produce high levels of emissions, other alternatives may produce similar levels of CO2 and other chemicals.
"If someone drives a car from London to Edinburgh and there is only one person in the car, then this would create more carbon emissions than would be attributed to each person flying to Edinburgh," he claimed.
Mr Buckley explained that for this type of trip, rail travel would be the most efficient form of travel that is available to the majority of people.
He added that the worst modes of transport for the environment are private helicopters and aeroplanes.
According to statistics by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, a typical journey from London to Paris by train will produce 22kg of CO2, while the same journey by plane will produce 244kg.
