Travel is not simply heading to an airport to get to a destination but it is the emotional and physical journey and the sum off a person's experiences along the way, it has been argued.

Writer and philosopher Alain de Botton has claimed people need to embrace the full experience of travelling and focus more closely on the reasons they have for visiting a place, not simply on the fact that it is cheap or easy to get to.

"Travel is a psychological adventure as much as anything else and it's a pity that travel agents are so narrowly focused on where we want to go rather than why we want to go," Mr Botton commented.

According to research from travelsupermarket.com, east Anglians are the thriftiest holiday spenders in the UK. They paid just £236 per person per week for holidays during the last quarter of 2009; this was compared to the most expensive group - Londoners - who spent £331.
