Many holidaymakers are going over their set budget during their trip, MSN.com has reported.
According to research from price comparison site TravelSpec.com, as many as 94 per cent of tourists exceed their holiday budget by more than £500.
The survey of 6,000 people also found that 78 per cent of travellers admitted spending frivolously in tax-free stores at the airport before flying out.
Male holidaymakers were said to be more extravagant with their spending than their female counterparts, with 74 per cent spending as much as £50 on tax-free products, compared to just 40 per cent of women.
Rafi Neumann, managing director of TravelSpec.com, commented, “With more people choosing to stay at home this summer, those who have booked holidays abroad have done so with a strict budget in place.
"However, once travellers adopt the 'holiday' state of mind they are more easily persuaded to part with their cash, especially when there are discounts available."
