Travellers to Munich for the famous Oktoberfest festival have been offered some tips on the festival's etiquette.

Oktoberfest veteran Karin Wolfe of the AP news service has given some advice to allow revellers to fit in.

The festival starts in late September and this year run until October 7th, and include German Unity Day on October 3rd.

Ms Wolfe recommended planning on going to Munich that when drinking from fluted glasses that wheat beers are served in, they should clink them while holding the thicker bottom of the glass.

And while many beers are served in a litre stein, asking for a German Maas will impress the hosts with a little local knowledge.

Festival-goers are also reminded that during Oktoberfest sharing is key, as all partying takes place in long communal tables shared by strangers.

Oktoberfest is a festival that goes back to 1810, and today covers over 40 hectares with amusement rides and tents offering beers from all over Germany, as well as plenty of local food such as sausage, cheese noodles, hendl (chicken) and sauerkraut.

In 1999 it drew as many as 6 million visitors.
