Many Brits continue to be complacent about their likelihood of contracting malaria while on holiday, it has been claimed.
Jo Yirrel, an ambassador for Malaria Hotspots, said despite the efforts of travel professionals, many people still head off on holiday with the misguided belief that it could not possibly happen to them.
She commented: "If you've been to a malaria destination and you have any unexplained ill feeling, you feel like you might have a cold or flu coming, just go and see a doctor, have a blood test and get it checked out."
Ms Yirrel added the most high risk destinations are parts of Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
According to Malaria Hotpots, up to 2,000 UK travellers return home each year suffering from the disease.
The organisation noted there has been a 190 per cent increase in the number of British travellers returning from holiday with malaria over the last ten years.
