Brits taking out travel insurance to visit exotic destinations should remember to look after their surroundings while they are on holiday, it has been noted.

Erika Harms, executive director of the Tourism Sustainability Council and senior advisor on Tourism at the United Nations Foundation, said many world renowned destinations face an uncertain future as the impact of tourism needs to be managed properly by local authorities.

She commented: "If you're looking at World Heritage sites in particular, how do you manage the influx of tourism, the provision of services and the impact?"

According to Wanderlust magazine's annual Threatened Wonders list that is to be published next month, World Heritage sites that face a difficult future due to the impact of tourism are Wadi Rum in Jordan, Tulum in Mexico, Yangshuo in China, Timbuktu in Mali, the Bay of Fires in Tasmania, Macchu Picchu in Peru, Jaisalmer in India and Stone Henge in the UK.

Brits planning a trip to a World Heritage site might like to take out holiday insurance with InsureandGo.
