The Association of British Travel Agents has advised travellers it is vital to check the latest travel advice from the Foreign Office before setting off for the Beijing Olympics.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has warned travellers that extra security measures surrounding the games may mean they are subject to "stop and searches" in areas near to Olympic happenings and that visitors must carry their passport at all times as police may carry out random checks.

Those hoping to go to the games will need to get a visa in advance from London's Chinese embassy and should ensure their passport is valid for at least six months.

Visitors should also be aware that they risk arrest if attending public demonstrations or distributing "political literature," and that appearing under the influence of alcohol in public may cause offence to locals.

Spectators travelling to the games must ensure that when they arrive in China they are able to show authorities proof of where they are booked to stay, and that they have obtained the right travel insurance.

Figures from USA Today claim that China expects 500,000 foreigners to arrive for the games, for which more than 7 million tickets have been put on sale, according to China Daily.
