New security measures have been introduced for British tourists travelling to Spain, the Department of Transport (DfT) has warned.

Tourists flying to Spain have been advised to allow some extra time for check-in, in order to avoid disruption or delays as the new measures are being introduced.

Passengers will now have to supply personal details while they are checking in or at the booking desk, called advance passenger information (API).

Airlines have been required by the Spanish government to provide this information on all passengers, so that those who refuse might not be able to travel.

These will simply consist of much of the information already contained within the traveller's passports, such as name, address and the registration number of the travel document being used.

The DfT recommends that travellers check in with plenty of time, at least initially while the new scheme is being implemented, in order to avoid flight delays.
