Holidaymakers have been advised to check their travel insurance policies before travelling to make sure that they have adequate cover for their trip.

Insurance provider AXA has said that despite many people taking out travel policies, there is still a risk that people could find themselves without cover because they have failed to check the full details of their plan.

"We are aware from our own claims area that independent travellers have run into problems with their travel insurance," said Edward Dutton, AXA's personal insurance director.

He added that cover for independent travel is something that needs to be better regulated in the marketplace as a growing number of people look to go it alone on their holidays.

Particular issues that need to be addressed are support for circumstances that would normally be handled by tour operators or travel agents.

Elsewhere, the Financial Services Authority has announced recently that it will introduce new regulations from January 1st next year in order to make insurance policies easier to understand.

InsureandGo offers tailored backpacker insurance for those looking to take a trip on their own.
