Drivers taking their cars on European holidays need to check the terms of their
car insurance, the AA has announced.
A spokesperson for the organisation has said that while travellers within the EU will automatically have third party cover, they may not be comprehensively insured under the terms of their policy.
Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, said: "If you're thinking of taking a car [to] the continent, you do need to check with your insurer."
He added that some
car insurance services do offer up to 90 days' free comprehensive cover for vehicles anywhere in Europe, but that full protection will cost more with some providers.
Comprehensive cover is useful in the event of an accident he asserted, because "you've got the expense of getting your car removed and so on, which wouldn't be covered by third party insurance".
