Some 60 per cent of parents believe that their toddlers have damaged their homes in some way.

Recent research by Direct Line Home Response 24 also suggests that one in ten of such parents also think that their children's destructive behaviour has reduced the value of their home.

Andrew Lowe, spokesperson for the firm, comments: "While it is impossible to put measures in place that make a home toddler-proof, we recommend all parents ensure they have sufficient insurance to cover possible accidents and make sure any repairs are carried out by qualified tradesmen."

Earlier this month, it was estimated by Sainsbury's Bank that damage to UK homes courtesy of children and pets during the October half-term holidays could top £100 million.

Whether they have children or not, consumers wishing to shop around for a competitive deal on home insurance may find that they benefit from contacting InsureandGo to obtain a quote.
