Jamaica is set to benefit from two new direct flights to the island from the UK, which could bring in an additional 9,000 visitors a year according to the Jamaican Tourist Board (JTB).
The flights will be operated both by Airtours beginning on July 18th of this year, and Thomsonfly in May of next year.
They will depart from airports in the midlands and have Montego Bay as theird destination.
Airtours' service is imminent, and will operate from East Midlands Airport for eight weeks during the summer, departing on Wednesdays from the UK and returning on Thursdays.
Thomsonfly's flights will operate from Birmingham International Airport from May 5th to October 20th of 2008, departing from the UK on Mondays to return on Tuesdays.
"The Midlands has traditionally always had a strong connection to Jamaica, and boasts a vibrant Jamaican community. These extra flights are good news for Jamaicans living in the Midlands, who travel regularly to the island for business and to visit relatives, for holidaying Brits and for Jamaica's tourist industry," said Elizabeth Fox, regional director for the UK/Northern Europe for JTB.
The flights will further spur the strong investment the island is making on its tourist sector, with 10,000 new rooms expected to be added by 2012.
