A new survey by the European Transport Safety Council has ranked the UK among the worst EU countries in endeavouring to reduce the number of road deaths.
The European Union (EU) set itself a target in 2001 of reducing road deaths in its 27 member states to 200,000 by 2010.
But the drop in the four years until 2005 has been below 20 per cent, when a 50 per cent reduction by 2010 is needed, leading to worries that not enough efforts are being made to meet the target.
France had the best record of the countries studied, with a drop of 35 per cent between 2001 and 2005.
The UK ranked a poor 20th of the 27 countries, with a drop below double figures at seven per cent.
This position was even worse in the area of accidents caused by drink driving, where the UK ranked 22nd of 27, having actually recorded a rise in accidents up until 2005.
But overall, the survey revealed the UK is one of the safer places to drive in the EU, ranking sixth out of the 27 in the number of deaths per million.
