British motorists enjoy making music and merriment to pass the time while driving, according to car insurance provider Confused.com.

Whether alone or in convoy, a survey by the firm has found that more than three in four people laugh out loud and sing at the top of their voices while in their vehicle.

There are regional variations reported, with Swansea residents proving the most ardent chucklers, with 86 per cent laughing while driving.

Plymouth faired less well in the car comedy stakes, with just 65 per cent of people giggling when behind the wheel.

Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.com, said: "Laughing and singing in your car is conducive to better driving conditions as it makes for calmer and more rational drivers. Laughter, especially, is linked to the production of endorphins which will help drivers."

For those looking to keep their head in stressful driving situations, the RAC advises people to put drops of lavender oil on cotton wool balls and place them in driver side pockets to help maintain concentration.

InsureandGocar insurance policies offer competitive protection for gigglers and warblers alike.
