The price of
car insurance can pale in comparison to the cost of replacing a broken engine, but drivers may be putting theirs at risk by not checking their oil levels.
A study carried out as part of this year's National Oil Check Week (June 15th to 19th) has revealed that millions of pounds worth of preventable damage could be being caused to vehicles due to poor maintenance.
Mike Bewsey of Comma Oil - which commissioned the study - said: "We're far too reliant on technology and we've allowed ourselves to become far too lazy. Vehicle maintenance is an essential part of being a responsible motorist."
The study showed that only 32 per cent of motorists maintained the proper level of oil in their engine, with six per cent having too much and 62 per cent having either low or dangerously low levels.
According to business secretary Lord Mandelson, the government's car scrappage scheme has so far proven popular, with more than 60,000 people trading in their old vehicle for a new, more environmentally friendly alternative.
