The UK is one of the friendliest countries in the world, according to a recent poll.

Britain came third, just behind Canada and Australia, in the latest Anholt Nation Brands Index (NBI).

More than 25,000 consumers from 35 countries were asked to rate countries in terms of how friendly their inhabitants were.

The UK moved up seven places this quarter, with analysts suggesting that high profile British figures such as David Beckham and Cat Deeley have helped to raise the country's profile.

UK actors' recent dominance in the Oscars may also have boosted Britain's image overseas, with Dame Helen Mirren picking up the best actress award at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles last month.

British tourism is also doing well, moving up from eighth place last quarter to fifth.

"One part of the NBI that the UK does not usually score well on is the human side," said creator Simon Anholt.

He added: "Across the globe, we have previously been thought of as well-respected rather than well-loved. This profile could have changed due to the UK appearing constantly in the media at the moment, British cinema being a key factor to this international success."

The survey also noted that Britain retained its status as the world's favourite nation.
