The credit crunch is affecting the health of the nation, according to Friends Provident.

According to research by the financial services group and UK charity the Blood Pressure Association, almost 29 million people (two thirds of the population) are feeling more stressed and less fit and healthy.

In news that may interest people with life insurance policies, seven per cent are drinking more and six per cent are smoking more.

Most people (56 per cent) are buying cheaper food to save money, with 15 per cent spending less on fruit and vegetables.

An increased number people are also regularly buying ready-meals or takeaways (77 per cent).

Mark Jones of Friends Provident warned of "serious ramifications" from the credit crunch and said that poor diet and lack of exercise could affect blood pressure and health.

In related news, reformed smokers are enjoying financial benefits as well as health ones, according to Moneyfacts.

The finance information provider said that if an average 30-a-day smoker quit the habit, they could save £250 a month.

InsureandGo offers a range of life insurance policies to suit individual needs.
