The recent floods in England have led to a massive increase in home insurance claims, according to new research.

Price comparison site Moneysupermarket.com revealed that in towns such as Sheffield and Hull, among the worst affected, the number of claims rose by 300 per cent in June compared to the previous month.

In towns such as Doncaster and from the West Midlands and Scotland, home insurance claims had more than doubled.

For Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, the surge in applications is no surprise: "Clearly, homeowners who narrowly escaped the floods this time have realised that without any insurance cover, they could be left footing bills for tens of thousands of pounds in the future."

Premiums have not increased significantly compared to the number of claims, according to the website, although there have been reports of insurers being forced to blacklist up to one million homes due to their being built in floodplains with insufficient protection.

Over two million homes in the UK are built on floodplains, and Mr Mason urged those that were to get home insurance.
