Britons spend more money on holidays than any other European nation, according to a new survey.

The average amount forked out for a holiday among Britons was €2,579 (£1,744), compared to €2,025 in Germany, €2,029 in Italy and €2,006 in France.

While it remains the highest average holiday cost among Europeans, this year's British figure is down from €2,795 in 2006.

Britons also travel more frequently than their counterparts on the continent, with nearly half intending to travel more than once this year, compared to 23 per cent in the rest of Europe.

Charles Walckenaer, managing director of Europ Assistance UK & Ireland, which undertook the survey, said: "The survey reinforces the British public's love of holidaying and how they not only have the highest budget for holidaying but they also travel more than their European neighbours."

The survey also found that Britons are more internet-savvy than the rest of Europe, with 51 per cent using the internet to book holidays, compared to 39 per cent in the rest of the continent.
