UK homes will go substantial changes in the next twenty years as they respond to environmental and demographic concerns, Alliance & Leicester has reported.
Research by the mortgage lender and think-tank the Centre for Future Studies, argues that environmental and lifestyle pressures will drive a strong need for new homes with new specifications.
The report estimates that one-third of the UK's total housing stock will be built by 2050 as the need for a new type of home increases.
Due to an increased risk of flooding as a result of climate change, houses built on stilts will become more common, the report indicated.
Solar panels, reusing and recycling of water and bio-fuels as an energy source will be increasingly popular features.
Other solutions could be inverted roofs to help with the gathering of water, and household refuse management systems.
"Over the next 20 years the impacts of technology and climate change will bring about a renaissance in how we live at home," said Dr Frank Shaw, a director at the Centre for Future Studies.
Stephen Leonard, director of mortgages for Alliance & Leicester argued that there will be a new era in home building in the next twenty years due to changing demographics and the environment, with the government a strong advocate for the building of these types of home.
