The UK hotel industry has seen little boost in demand, despite the fact that more people are planning to stay in the country this summer, it has been revealed.

Liz Hall, head of hospitality and leisure research at PricewaterhouseCoopers, said that even though more people are planning to stay in the UK rather than head overseas on holiday this year, there have been few signs of a boom in hotel bookings.

Ms Hall commented: "There is talk about domestic revival but how many people are going to stay in hotels in the UK as opposed to camping or going on a day trip?"

According to Euromonitor International's Forecast Restatement - Travel and Tourism in a Crisis report revealed at the World Travel Market Vision Conference earlier this month, the global hotel market was expected to grow by 4.8 per cent in 2009 before the credit crunch took hold.

However, the new figures show that the market is instead likely to shrink by 3.6 per cent.
