According to the RAC foundation, the UK population is slightly more dependent on their cars today than more than a decade ago, the BBC has reported.

Close to three quarters of the UK population now have a driving license, a rise from the two-thirds proportion of 1993.

And half the UK population never use the bus as they have not been convinced that public transport is a viable alternative.

The report shows that campaigns from green groups and calls to reduce congestion are falling on deaf ears as more and more drivers take to the roads.

London is the main region that is going against the general trend in this case, as car usage in the capital has dipped since 2002, and public transport attracts a strong number of users.

Less than ten per cent of the population in the UK cycle regularly and under 20 per cent take the bus.

Speaking for the RAC Foundation, research development manager Elizabeth Dainton expressed the need to convince the public that there are more reasonable alternatives to the car.
