There are almost double the amount of
pet insurancepolicies in the UK than for people, which gives the UK the biggest number of insured pets after Sweden it has been claimed.
Last year, research by Ipsos MORI showed that almost a quarter (23 per cent) of the UK's pets had
pet insurance, compared to 12.2 per cent of the human population Tesco insurance reveals.
Former president of the society of practicing veterinary surgeons, Ewan McNeil, said: "I'm not surprised that pet insurance is becoming so popular - people will do everything they can to ensure the best for their pets."
He went on to say that the treatment available for animals has progressed a lot in the last few years, with a number of sophisticated treatments now available for a wide variety of animal illness.
Head of Tesco Pet Insurance Allan Burns said he was also unsurprised by the findings, pointing out that it has been known for a long time that people living in the UK are "pet mad".
In April 2006 the Animal Welfare Act was passed in the UK. The act means owners must provide animals with the correct environment to live in, a good diet and protection from illness, according to the Department for Environmental Food and Rural Affairs.
