The UK was warned over modernising its travel infrastructure at a recent meeting of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), travel website travelmole.co.uk has reported.

The president of the council Jean-Claude Baumgarten urged the UK government to look into the infrastructure situation or risk losing its current strong economic position.

'It's not only Heathrow, although it is an example. If a country is not up to standard or ready to absorb the traffic, it will go somewhere else. Competition is very fierce among countries,' he warned in comments to travelmole.

Mr Baumgarten further added governments needed to have a master plan for the next 10-15 years, as tourism can be a significant part of a country's economy, over 9 per cent of GDP for the UK.

Tourism also contributes 8.5 per cent to the UK economy.

The pressure on the UK is also because it needs to have the right infrastructure in place for the Olympics taking place in London in 2012.

The WTTC gathers the chief executives of the most prominent 100 tourism and travel companies, to raise awareness of the importance of the travel industry.
