More British tourists are choosing to fly from regional airports across the country, new statistics have recently revealed.
The figures released by the Civil Aviation Authority showed that the number of passengers flying from regional UK airports rose to 98 million last year, now accounting for over 42 per cent of the total.
This was a four per cent growth from the year before.
A survey carried out as part of the report questioned over 200,000 people at 11 airports across the country, and indicated that growth in the five major London airports had been slightly less at 3 per cent, for a total of 137 million passengers, a proportion of 58 per cent.
Alicante, Palma and Malaga, as well as Dublin were the most popular destinations for those travelling from regional airports.
Those taking a flight from a major London airport preferred larger cities such as Edinburgh or New York.
The rise of budget airlines, which often use regional airports far from city centres to cut on flight costs, was seen as one of the main drivers of recent growth.
