The UK has the most active online population in the European Union, according to a study by internet ranking service comScore.

The review of European internet activity found that the UK's computer users access the Web an average of 21 days every month, significantly higher than the 16.5 days average for the rest of the EU.

UK citizens spent over 34 hours viewing 3,440 web pages, compared to the 24 hours and 2,662 web pages that was the average.

The highest internet penetration was in Scandinavian countries, where over 80 per cent of the population used the Net.

Germany had the largest online population in numbers at 32.6 million users, although this was less than half the entire country's population.

The most popular website across EU member states was not surprisingly Google, which topped the charts on 13 out of 16 countries.

Microsoft and Yahoo were second and third respectively.

The study also found that the EU was ahead of the US in average daily users over the age of 15 on the internet with eight million more.
