The UK has the most expensive hotels in the whole of Europe, new figures reveal.

At the end of last year, the average cost of one night in a UK hotel was an astonishing £98.

The capital saw its hotel rates go up 22 per cent on the previous year, with an average stay now costing £107 in London, according to the figures from Hotels.com.

Surprisingly, however, Bath hotel prices beat those of the capital, with an average stay in the city costing £114.

Patrick Oqvist, marketing director for the website, said: "The UK remained the most expensive country in Europe during 2006, demonstrating the rising popularity of our cities as tourist destinations."

He added: "The fact that it is easier than ever for overseas travellers to come to the UK, with falling costs of air and rail travel undoubtedly having an impact."

Elsewhere on the continent, the cost of a hotel room in Rome was £94, while Amsterdam hotels averaged £93.

Moscow, New York and Dubai were the only locations which had higher room prices than the UK, with stays costing £172, £155 and £124 respectively.

Mr Oqvist advised: "We would recommend that travellers do shop around for hotel rooms. In our experience, there are always bargains to be found for those who use the major hotel sites."
