Those who like to jet off to foreign climes still want to have a feeling of home, it has been claimed.

A spokesperson for the Association of Independent Tour Operators said that people were choosing holiday destinations that still had British feel as well as offering good beaches and hotels.

The representative went on to say that places like the Caribbean, Abu Dhabi and Muscat in Oman still "held a British resemblance".

According to an 'Up and Coming Destinations for 2009' list published by Opodo, Lima in Peru has seen a rise in bookings of 98 per cent since 2007.

Amman in Jordan has witnessed bookings increase by almost 80 per cent and the number of people booking a holiday to Cairo in Egypt has gone up by 76 per cent.

Figures released by the Office of National Statistics show that the number of visits made by UK tourists to Europe increased to 55.6 million from last year.
