UK workers are set to enjoy some extra time in the sun as the Government introduces measure to prevent companies from considering bank holidays as part of annual leave.
It is currently legal for firms to include bank holiday as part of their staff's annual leave entitlement.
From October, this will be reduced to four bank holiday days, and none altogether by April of 2009, in order to allow firms to make a gradual transition to the new regime.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will also set up an online calculator to enable workers to work out their new holiday entitlements.
Employment relations minister Jim Fitzpatrick advocated the new measure to the BBC, saying it would have benefits for both employers and staff: 'This extra time off will make a real difference in the lives of hard-working people a proper rest from work and more time to spend with their families and friends.'
The new measure also received vocal support from TUC and the Confederation of British Industry.
