Consumers who are unsure of the level of cover available to them when driving abroad should contact their insurer before they travel, one expert has noted.
A spokesman for More Th>n said this week that UK motorists may not be entitled to the same level of protection they enjoy at home and that this can often be remedied by contacting their insurer to arrange extended cover.
Keith Maxwell, motor account manager at the group, said that comprehensive UK motor insurance policies can be limited if there is no foreign use extension and that it was important to clarify this before travelling.
"What customers should do is, if in the UK they have comprehensive cover and they want the same level of cover when they're driving abroad, they need to phone up their insurer and the insurer will issue
a foreign use extension," he said.
According to the Association of British Insurers all motor insurance policies carry the minimum amount of cover required by law in European Union countries or by UK law if that is found to be greater.
