Homeowners who want to improve their homes should not attempt to install under-floor heating unless they "intimately understand the process", according to an expert.

Bruce Allen, chief executive of HETAS, who approve solid fuel domestic heating appliances, fuels and services, said specialist knowledge and experience was needed and that it would not be an easy job for a DIY enthusiast.

When under-floor heating systems are installed in homes many things must be taken into account, including emissions, heat-loss calculations and heat requirements, according to HETAS.

MTW Research's UK Underfloor Heating Industry report said in February this year that the market for under-floor heating could exceed a net worth of £300 million during this year.

According to Green Works Energy, under-floor heating can be energy efficient as it can use less energy than traditional radiator heating and give intelligent distribution of heat.

It also claims that under-floor heating is a cleaner looking way of heating a house, getting rid of the need for unsightly radiators and wires as well as removing the causes of some dust.
