Following figures highlighting the varying levels of crime in university towns and cities throughout the UK from the Good University Guide, students have been urged to take out protection.

Statistics from the group show that Nottingham is the least safe city in which to attend university, while at the other end of the table Bath, Canterbury and Lancaster are revealed to be the safest.

The Independent reports that Nottingham - famous for the legendary morally-driven thief Robin Hood - was closely followed in the rankings by Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol and Leeds.

Bernard Kingston, founder of the Good University Guide, said: "The issue of safety is of growing concern to students and their parents and it is important that they know the situation in their chosen university cities."

In its top tips for reducing the effect of crime while at university, the newspaper recommends taking out insurance to make sure expensive items are covered.

The Good University Guide has listed crime statistics as one of the principal influencing factors for those choosing where to study.
