The British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) has suggested that uninsured drivers are causing a "massive problem".

However, the organisation asserted that measures have been in put in place to create a new enforcement agency charged with cracking down on those driving without car insurance.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the group, said: "Two million people currently drive without insurance and it's a massive problem. BIBA is working with the government to find a way to prevent that."

He added that the offence is estimated to cost innocent drivers as much as £400 million every year in inflated insurance premiums.

This works out at an additional £30 per year for every car-owner in the UK.

A new enforcement agency coming into operation will crosscheck the Vehicle Registration Database with the Motor Insurance Database in an effort to catch uninsured drivers more effectively.

Price comparison service moneysupermarket.com recently released statistics suggesting that as many as one in seven vehicle owners have driven without insurance in the past 12 months.
