New research shows that as many as 350,000 people may have driven without car insurance, putting themselves at risk of large fines if caught.

The Moneyexpert study also found that young people are the group most likely to have committed the offence, with nearly half of all those found to have driven uninsured aged between 18 and 24.

Citing research by the Motor Insurer's Bureau, uninsured drivers add an additional £30 pounds to the average UK insurance premium.

Sean Gardner of MoneyExpert.com said: "It's a real worry that many people persist in driving without insurance. They are putting the personal and financial security of others at risk."

He added that a rising cost in premiums should not be seen as an excuse to avoid taking out vehicle protection.

When questioned as to the reason for driving uninsured, 46 per cent said that they had inadvertently failed to renew their policy.

According to the RAC, one in ten drivers have been involved in an accident with an uninsured vehicle.
