People who go abroad without taking out travel insurance "must be crazy", a spokesperson from Endsleigh Insurance has claimed.

John Boyles, account manager for the group, described travel cover as vital for all holidaymakers, explaining that covering costs such as medical bills and repatriation can be extremely expensive.

He also warned that some people are complacent about protecting their wellbeing overseas because they are used to free healthcare in this country.

"People are under the impression that they'll be covered under any reciprocal health arrangements which in truth go some of the way but they don't protect you for all of the things that might happen," Mr Boyles commented.

He concluded by urging people looking to cut back on cover in light of the credit crunch to reconsider, reiterating that protecting oneself abroad was vital.

According to statistics published by American Express, nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of people plan to go overseas without travel protection.
