home insurance policy.
So claims Halifax today, in a warning to those intent on carrying out more experimental home improvements.
It suggests that television DIY programmes may be responsible for a surge in the number of people taking on major renovation tasks while not appreciating the skill of the professionals conducting such changes on screen.
According to the company's research, more than a quarter of men have attempted to install new wiring in their home while 24 per cent have taken on an entire new kitchen.
Senior claims manager Martyn Foulds explains: "In reality, trying to tackle certain areas you are not qualified for such as electrics or plumbing could invalidate your home insurance policy, leaving you liable for any subsequent damage.
"We'd recommend using a reputable tradesman rather than going it alone."
Recently, Norwich Union and Peterborough Building Society released data suggesting that 36 per cent of men still claim authority when deciding how much money is spent on home improvements, rather than making joint decisions with their partners.
