Those looking to purchase used cars are showing an inclination towards more fuel-efficient vehicles, it has been noted.
Information services provider Experian has released statistics suggesting that sales of used diesel cars has risen four per cent over 2007, while sales of petrol vehicles fell by 4.4 per cent.
The number of people buying used diesel vehicles in Greater London increased by nine per cent, more than twice the national average and the highest regional growth rate in the country.
East Anglia saw the highest number of used electric vehicles purchased, while people in the north-west purchased the most hybrid vehicles.
Commenting on the trends, Kirk Fletcher, managing director of Experian's Automotive division, said: "There has been a lot of media attention, not only around the environment and the effect of the most polluting cars, but also on the forthcoming car tax increases and the rise in fuel duty."
Experian has recently suggested that 2008 will be a tough year for the used car market as a tightening of economic circumstances affect sales.
